Sydney Skye Rowswell is a British artist living just outside Bristol, UK where she works from her gorgeous garden studio.
Whilst keen to never be entirely pigeonholed, she considers herself mainly a figurative & portrait artist. Her strong & unique style has really been emerging in the last year. Combining a variety of mediums alongside her consistent monochromatic pencil drawings to give depth, interest & contrast.
Rowswell says contrast is one of the most vital factors in her work - light & shadow, soft & edgy, quiet & busy, detailed & abstract, warmth & coolness. The play between the opposite forces feed her imagination and reflect the contrast she appreciates & draws from in life outside of the studio too.
Rowswell says although she is inspired by almost everything, her biggest inspiration by far is her children & partner. She says “the love I have for my family can’t help but show up, in one form or another, in the work I make. We’re an epic little unit and I doubt that I would be chasing my dreams at all without their love & encouragement”.
The artists creative influences are broad. They range from graffiti & street artists to renaissance painters to children’s literature ….and everything in between. Interestingly she says that her deep & lifelong love for electronic music, mainly techno, trance, influence her work even more than visual art.
